FAQs
A: A Vision Plan is a planning document that establishes a future direction for the park. Vision Plans typically include an analysis of existing conditions, a summary of community engagement that took place in support of the Vision Plan, a clear Vision Statement, and a set of supporting guiding principles that will make a clear recommendation for how the SHP can be reimagined to fulfill its continuing role as a State Historic Park.
A: In the aftermath of the December 2024 fire that severely damaged the Bidwell Mansion, California State Parks launched several response efforts. These included a formal investigation into the incident, which resulted in an arrest and conviction of the arsonist in early 2025 who is now serving an 11-year sentence in State Prison; work to clean up debris and remove hazards which was completed in July 2025; and structural and site assessments began in September 2025 to better understand the condition of the surviving structure and the impact of the fire on park resources A report summarizing these assessments is in the process of being completed.
A: The Vision Plan will offer recommendations for historic property treatments for the Bidwell Mansion, a National Register of Historic Places property, as well as help guide subsequent planning and design for the SHP’s future desired uses. These decisions will be based on analysis of existing condition of the Mansion structure, evaluation of preservation options, cost and benefit considerations, and extensive input from the public and interested parties and partners. Community input, including from Tribal partners, along with professional expertise in historic preservation and design, will be integrated to form a shared vision for the preservation and future interpretation at Bidwell Mansion SHP.
A: At the onset of the project in 2025, California State Parks invited all California Native American tribes associated with the park, as identified by the California Native American Heritage Commission, to participate in this planning effort. To date, Government to Government discussions are ongoing with the Mechoopda Indian Tribe to explore ways to better interpret and present the ongoing legacy of the Mechoopda people at the park and ensure appropriate messaging with respect to the tribe throughout the planning process.
A: At the time of the December 2024 fire, the Bidwell Mansion was undergoing a renovation effort that began with the removal of certain historical materials for safe storage at an offsite location. However, many materials were not relocated and were lost in the fire.
A: Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park is currently closed while ongoing assessments and planning takes place. The visitor center has remained closed since the fire but has periodically opened for special events. We hope to welcome the public back to the visitor center on weekends this summer (2025).To stay updated about the park’s reopening and future onsite special events, please visit ReimagineBidwellMansion.org, www.parks.ca.gov/bidwellmansion, or connect with us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BidwellMansionSHP/ [PJ1]

A: The namesakes of the Bidwell Mansion are John and Annie Bidwell. John Bidwell (1819-1900) is affectionately known as the founder of Chico for his contributions to Chico’s politics and agriculture. Annie Bidwell (1839-1918) was a prominent participant and contributor to a variety of social causes, including women’s suffrage and the temperance movement. John moved to Butte County in 1847, beginning a nearly 75-year residence by the Bidwells. The Bidwell Mansion wascompleted in 1868 and throughout the Bidwells’ lifetimes the mansion served as the center of Chico’s social and civic life.
A: After the survey closes and the first virtual community workshop takes place, the planning team will begin work on drafting potential alternatives and a vision for the site. These draft alternatives and draft vision will be presented at an in-person community workshop in Summer 2026 for feedback from the public. With the input collected during this phase of engagement, the preferred alternative and vision will be prepared and presented for public feedback in Fall or Winter 2026.
A: At this time, funding to support implementation of the Vision Plan is uncertain; however, once the Vision Plan is developed, State Parks will investigate funding options not limited to the State of California, private donations, philanthropic organizations, in-kind contributions, and other sources.
A: The duration will depend on many factors, such as funding, and an outcome of the Vision Plan will be to help prioritize its implementation. State Parks anticipates some projects realized sooner than others; however, the Vision Plan, as a whole, may not be implemented for multiple years or perhaps a decade or two. It’s too soon to determine an accurate implementation timeline.
A: The amounts were determined following an assessment by a multi-disciplinary team comprised of State Park historians, architects, and engineers.
