Sonoma County is updating its General Plan to guide how land is used in unincorporated Sonoma County over the next 20 years.

Study areas are places where we’re taking a closer look at how land could be used in the future. They are shaded purple on the map.

We're exploring whether the types of development allowed today, such as homes, businesses and community services, still meet community needs, and whether changes might make sense.

We started by looking at existing planning boundaries, how land is currently used, and where areas where services such as water and sewer are available or could be provided in the future. This helps us focus on places where changes may be possible while continuing to protect farmland and natural areas.

Yes! You can place pins anywhere on the map to suggest changes, identify places that you think should stay the same, or recommend other areas for the County to take a look a closer look at.

No. The study areas are a starting point. No changes to land use or study area boundaries have been decided.

Your comments are an important source of input and will be considered alongside technical data, state mandates, and other sources that shape land uses in unincorporated Sonoma County. This information will collectively help us refine study areas and start considering different options for updating the county's land use map. We will consolidate this information and bring the draft Land Use Scenarios to the community to compare next year.
