Budgeting Activity

The purpose of this activity is to stimulate conversation regarding the tradeoffs the East Bay Regional Park District makes to create a budget with limited funds. This illustrative budgeting activity helps you take a deeper look at some of the budgeting questions the Park District considers and will help the Park District to better understand community priorities for budgeting.

Every year the Park District goes through a budgeting process to decide which projects will be funded. A budget process considers two major cost categories: 1) capital, or construction, costs and 2) operations and maintenance costs. Because there are more construction projects each year than the Park District can afford to build, we consider how well each project supports our long-term goals, how much it will cost, and how much it will take to maintain over time to ensure we’re building toward the future we want to see.

The operations and maintenance budget is used for taking care of everything that is already built and providing excellent experiences throughout the parks. This includes both regular and daily maintenance and the staff that maintain parks, ensure public safety, and interface with visitors. While construction costs are one-time costs, operations and maintenance costs are ongoing.

Give it a try! Think about the next 10 years for the Park District and our East Bay communities and select the types of projects you think should be funded.

A slider at the bottom of each box lets you control how much to spend on each project type. You can use your mouse to slide the white circular button, or use the arrows next to the dollar amount to increase or decrease your budget for each project type. If you would like to defund a project that you've selected, click the "Reset" button.

When you have finished creating a budget that reflects your priorities, click the “Submit” button at the bottom of your screen.
